Sweden is already among those countries with the lowest number of traffic fatalities in relation to its population. This is not enough, however. Swedish road safety work is based on a refusal to accept human death or lifelong suffering as a result of road traffic.
Swedish Parliament decided in June 2009 on a new interim target for road safety, whereby the number of fatalities was to be halved and the number of serious injuries was to be reduced by a quarter from 2007 to 2020.
The Swedish Road Administration produced the proposal in 2008 on instruction by the Government. According to the previous interim target, the number of road accident fatalities in 2007 was to be a maximum of 270 persons, which was half the number recorded in 1996. In 2007, the number of fatalities amounted to 471 persons, which was far above the interim target. Interim target work
